Concrete Cistern Waterproofing: Coating or Liner?
A leaking concrete cistern can often be fixed with a liquid-applied coating or a custom liner. The right choice depends on the condition of your concrete.
- Find the real source of the leak first
- Sound concrete: a coating may be enough

Coating or liner: which fits your cistern?
Sound concrete
A coating bonds to the existing concrete and is usually the lighter option when there are no major cracks or movement.
Cracked or damaged concrete
A liner acts as an independent barrier inside the tank, suited to older, cracked or hard-to-prepare surfaces.
Signs of a leak
Unexplained drops in water level, damp exterior walls, visible cracks and white powdery deposits inside the tank.
Preparation matters
A membrane bonded to dirty or loose concrete fails early. Empty the tank, remove loose material and photograph walls and cracks.
Three checks before you choose
- Confirm the concrete is sound. Look for movement, crumbling or active leaks.
- Plan for cracks and movement. A rigid coating can re-crack if the structure keeps moving.
- Confirm the product is suitable for drinking water if the cistern is potable. Ask for the certification by name.

Questions about concrete cistern waterproofing
Can you waterproof a concrete cistern with epoxy?
Some epoxy systems are made for tank and water-storage use. The product must suit the concrete, the tank conditions and the water use.
Is a liner better than a coating?
It depends on the concrete. Coatings bond to the existing surface, while liners are independent barriers suited to older, cracked or difficult surfaces.
