Cistern measurement guide

How to Measure a Cistern for a Custom Liner

All you need is a tape measure, your phone and a notepad. Best estimates are fine to start; we confirm everything before we build.

  • Rectangular: length x width x depth
  • Round: diameter and depth only
  • 6 to 9 clear photos help us get it right

No exact measurements needed. Phone photos are fine.

Length, width and depth of a cistern

Never enter a cistern to measure unless you are qualified to do so safely. Cisterns are confined spaces with real atmospheric hazards.

What you’ll need

  • A standard feet-and-inches tape measure
  • A phone or camera
  • A notepad to record measurements for the online form

Rectangular or square cisterns

Length x width x depth

  1. Length: the inside distance from one end wall to the opposite end wall.
  2. Width: the inside distance from side wall to side wall.
  3. Depth: from the cistern floor to the top of the usable interior wall.

For round cisterns, measure the diameter across and the depth only.

What photos should I take?

Six to nine clear photos help us build the right liner.

  • Entire interior: three or four photos
  • Access opening: a single photo will work
  • Walls and corners: one photo of each corner
  • Pipes and fittings: a photo of every pipe or fitting
  • Problem areas: anything you think is concerning

FAQ

Measuring FAQs

What measurements do you need for a quote?

We generally need the cistern’s length, width, and depth, along with information about its shape, construction, access opening, pipes, fittings, and any unusual internal features.

How accurate do my measurements need to be?

Initial measurements can often be used to begin the quoting process, but final manufacturing measurements should be as accurate as possible.

What if my cistern is not perfectly square?

That is common. Older cisterns in particular may have walls that are uneven, tapered, or slightly different in length. Multiple measurements can help us understand the actual shape.

What photos should I send?

Helpful photographs include the cistern opening, interior walls and floor, corners, pipes and fittings, visible cracks or damage, access area, and any existing liner.

Can you help me determine what measurements are needed?

Yes. If you are unsure how to measure your cistern, contact us and we can explain what information is needed for your particular configuration.
